Week 1

Hi boys and girls! Welcome to the first week of the Chicago-Bandung global exchange project. This blog is an important part of the project and will allow you to communicate with each other and share your thoughts. Each week, we will be posting two questions for you to answer about your lives in Chicago, USA or in Bandung, Indonesia. Please be respectful as you learn about each other’s lives and cultures. We look forward to reading your thoughtful responses. Also, feel free to post any questions you have for each other, photos, drawings, or anything else you want to share.

Our questions for the first week are:

1. What does “freedom” mean to you?

2. How would you describe your city?

Welcome! Selamat datang!

This blog is part of a very special project between Global Explorers Kids and Gagas Ceria Discovering English. During the project,  students participating in Global Explorers Kids’ residency at Marquette School of Excellence in Chicago, IL, USA and students at Gagas Ceria Discovering English, in Bandung, Indonesia will be sharing their cultures with each other through this blog and through collaborative art projects. They will share information about their cities and countries, their daily lives, their likes and dislikes….and learn about the differences and similarities between children half way across the world.

Some interesting facts for the students participating in this project:

  • Chicago is 9,858 miles (15,865 km) from Bandung.
  • There is a 12 hour time difference between the two cities. That means, when it is 9:00 am Monday morning in Chicago it is 9:00 pm Monday evening in Bandung. When it is 9:00 am Monday morning  in Bandung, it is 9:00 pm Sunday evening in Chicago.
  • Bandung is the capital of West Java province and the third largest city in Indonesia. There are about 2.4 million people living in Bandung.
  • Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois and the third largest city in the United States. There are about 2.7 million people living in Chicago. We are excited about the project and are looking forward to reading all the wonderful things the children will be sharing with each other.

    Happy Explorations!
